What is the one plant you must have every year in your balcony pots? Mine is Evening Scented Stock. The fragrance is heavenly. It’s got to be at least 15 years, if not more that I have been adding this plant to containers, near windows and/or doors. It’s not much to look at but on a summer’s evening, there are few scents more intoxicating.
I love container gardening @lotusflower, so I have a few favourites that I like to have in my planters every year. Grasses are a new found favourite and if I can find a way to incorporate the Japanese Blood Grass, I do. I like movement so tall wispy grasses look great even on their own in a pot. Other favourites are alyssum for the fragrance, red or green dracaenas, coleus and hostas for shade (yes, in a pot – I plant the hosta in the garden in the fall).
I really like Japanese Blood Grass too and I find grasses work very well in a small garden. As for trees, I am still trying to figure out how I’m going to fit a Spring Snow Crabapple in my yard! Either that or an Amur Maple, either tree or shrub form would be nice. I love their fall colour!
Spring is my favourite season and is it any wonder when peonies, irises, tulips, lilacs and so much more are in bloom? I’m sharing some photos of some of my favourite peonies. I hope you’ll share some of your favourite plants for a small garden here too.
