My daughter is moving the end of the month and can’t take her favourite perennial with her. I took photos for her of her Jacob’s Ladder, mind you it’s not blooming yet. She just loves the fern-like foliage. Has anyone else grown Jacob’s Ladder.

Thinking of her and this plant made me think about everyone here. I’m sure others have favourite perennials too. What is your favourite perennial and what do you like best about it?

Mine is the peony. I love the fragrance, it’s blowsy boldness and the beauty of the foliage that remains after the blooms.

I have Jacob’s Ladder. Their flower stalks are just pushing up higher than the other greenery right now. I split mine into three a few years ago. They always perform beautifully!

Favorite perennial? Has to be the peony, but it is difficult to pick. I loved my Key Lime Pie heuchera, but it didn’t survive this winter, after coming through five or six winters beautifully! I love ferns, bleeding hearts, my Freckles Violets. I love my Hawthorne bush with it’s red berries. I love my Summerwine Yarrow, so fern like and beautiful deep red flowers.

I love the combinations almost more than the individuals. I love a lush green space with lots of contrasting shapes, sizes and textures.

Another peony lover @conniepr! I bet your heuchera was absolutely beautiful. They’re such a bright addition to a shady area. Beautiful cat, by the way.

Thanks, Lotus Flower. My cats follow me around the yard all the time. It’s so cute!

By the way, I’ve tried the reaction buttons on this site, but they don’t seem to work. They just take me to the top of the page again. Is that happening for everyone or just me?

        • #10869

Hi @conniepr. That’s so cute. How many cats do you have Are they all the same breed?

Re: the reaction button, I have the same result. I’ve passed it on to the technology team, as I call them. Hopefully we can find a solution soon.

Thanks, Sunnyedm! Here’s my newest edging. This one’s in the front yard. You might have to enlarge the photo to get a good look at the edging.

I recently discovered the spooned Osteospermum and was amazed by its Dr. Seuss-like qualities! Might be my new favourite.

Oh this is awesome – love the colour and shape 🙂

Hi @lilylover. Don’t you love this Osteospermum, aka African Daisy? I was mesmerized by the spoon shaped petals the first time I saw it. It’s a really tough annual (here it’s an annual) that loves lots of sun. Excellent for containers and in ground planting.

  • #10870

    One of my favourite peonies.

@lilylover: Does the spooned osteospermum stay spooned or do the petals eventually open?

Hi @michellebazinet Osteospermum, which is an annual (oops), is available as a daisy type flower or the spooned petalled daisy. The spoons stay tight just like the photo! It’s so unique, I just love it!!

My favorite perennials are Shasta Daisey’s & Peonies…….I love how Hardy they both are, their beautiful blooms, their foliage and especially that they are great cut flowers to put in a vase. But I also love Poppies of all kinds, but unfortunately their blooms don’t last very long. In actuality I love most flowering perennials & the good old fashioned bi annuals such as holly hocks & Lupins. So you see it is hard to pick just one favorite I love them all!!

Hi @rita! Thank you for sharing your list and love of perennials! Cut flowers directly from your very own garden are a special treat! I wish poppy blooms lasted longer too.

My favourite has to be the Peony as well but Daylilies are a close second. I have one peony just about to bloom and another I just bought this year but no blooms so I’m hopeful I’ll see some from it next year. This is a pic from last year of the Peony that’s just about to bloom. None of my Daylilies are blooming yet either but I’m adding in some of last years pics.

I can’t seem to edit my original post so I’m doing a new post with the couple pics that didn’t upload =)

  • #11122

Hi @noirsphynx. Daylilies have come a long way from what used to be the norm of orange! Yours are eye-catching! I see you’re having problems with uploading photos. Our plug-in allows photos of 2000 KB and smaller. If you resize your photos you should have no problems uploading them here. Please try again. We’d love to see your peonies!

I purchased a new peony last year and it only had one bloom this year but it was fabulous – it is actually even a bit more
of a deeper pink than this picture, I love the feathery look as well. Looking forward to next year as well when it gets more established.
    🙂
